We've released new versions of our WinCati and Sensus interviewing products. We've also made Sensus the primary questionnaire authoring system for WinCati. This brings more advanced questionnaire design features to telephone interviewing, and makes true CATI and Web integration a reality.

WinCati 4.2 works with the time-tested and widely used Ci3 interviewing system or with Sensus. It has dozens of new enhancements and comes with even more standard features, including Auto Test for automatic questionnaire testing, Rapid Dial for efficient automated dialing, and Super View for on-screen monitoring and interviewer performance rating.

In Sensus 4.2 we've added the features required for conducting rigorous and efficient telephone interviewing to Sensus' already sophisticated roster of Web interviewing features. We've also given Sensus a new script editor with question navigator and included Auto Test for testing Web interviews.

WinCati 4.2 Mixed Mode is the most fully integrated telephone and Web interviewing system available. You can do CATI interviewing, Web interviewing, and CATI/Web Mixed-Mode interviewing -all with one flexible, easy-to-use system.

Starting with users of these 4.2 releases, we have extended telephone, e-mail, and fax support to include weekday evenings and Saturdays.

WinCati 4.2: One System for CATI, Web and CATI/Web Interviewing

WinCati 4.2 marks a milestone in CATI development. It combines WinCati and Sensus Web to form the most highly integrated CATI/Web system available.

In a single package you get:

  • A CATI system that is cost efficient to use while capable of adhering to rigorous research standards set by organizations such as the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  • An interviewing system based on the time-tested and widely used Ci3 system that can perform all of the interviewing functions expected of a telephone interviewing system and the functions of an advanced Web interviewing systems, without requiring HTML or JavaScript programming.

And, with the Mixed Mode option:

  • Web and CATI/Web mixed-mode interviewing that increases response rates, provides a sampling frame for projecting Web-based results, lowers interviewing costs and shortens study times.

WinCati has always been the leader in offering a full range of standard features. WinCati 4.2 expands that range even further to include:

Auto Test Auto Test makes productive use of your idle interviewing stations, day and night, by letting you automatically run a questionnaire and generate simulated respondent data and attempt information before a study is fielded. Auto Test runs your questionnaire by entering responses for each question that are within the ranges of responses you set when constructing the questionnaire. It follows the quota qualifications, branches and skips, and sample management rules you specify for the study.

You can inspect Auto Test's simulated data to identify problems with your questionnaire before interviewing begins. You can spot, for example, response ranges, skips, or randomizations that are mis-specified or branches that are never followed. You can also use the data for setting up cross tab and analysis specifications. You can check the simulated attempt information to see if your quota requirements and sample management rules are working as you intended.

Rapid Dial Rapid Dial uses ordinary modems for automated dialing to achieve 10-15% productivity gains. Interviewers listen as each number is dialed and then press a hot key (such as "b" for busy or "n" for no answer) to automatically record dispositions for no answers, busy's, answering machines, fax/modems, and disconnected numbers. Interviewers speak with respondents when calls are answered and can leave messages on answering machines.

Rapid Dial achieves productivity gains by controlling the pace of dialing and by shortening the attempt cycle when calls go unanswered. At the same time, it follows best practices by pausing before calling definite callbacks or refusals so interviewers can study the call history of these attempts before initiating the call.

Super View The Super View on-screen monitoring capability lets supervisors observe what interviewers see and do while conducting interviews. Supervisors can unobtrusively verify that interviewers are recording responses and call dispositions accurately and that they understand and are following prescribed procedures. On-screen monitoring can improve interviewer performance and lead to higher quality data.

Super View Interviewer Rating System The Super View Interviewer Rating System lets supervisors rate interviewers while they monitor. It includes a user-definable rating system to let you rate interviewers using your own scales and your own criteria. In addition to letting supervisors input, edit, and view interviewer ratings and track which supervisors rated which interviewers, it reports average ratings to help you compare interviewers' performance.

Online Data and Statistics Staff can view, edit and code respondent data from any computer connected to a WinCati network or from any computer with online access-only a browser and data login rights are required. Staff and clients with statistics login rights can view frequency counts, generate statistics, and run two-way cross tabs online, while studies are in progress.

20+ Export Formats WinCati respondent data can be exported to more than 20 formats, including Access, ASCII, dBase, Excel, SAS and SPSS. It can also be viewed and edited directly using dBase-compatible tools.

Overall, WinCati 4.2 continues WinCati's tradition as the best value/best practices industry leader.

WinCati 4.2 Mixed Mode: True CATI/Web Integration

WinCati 4.2 Mixed Mode is a new WinCati add-on option that lets you create studies that are pure CATI, pure Web interviewing, or any combination of the two. For example, you can recruit respondents by phone and let them choose whether to complete the interview by phone or online. For respondents who choose to complete the interview online, Mixed Mode can automatically send them e-mail invitations, reminders, and thank you messages, based on the interview status. Mixed Mode can also automatically direct interviews terminated online back to interviewers as callbacks so that they can be completed by phone.

The range of studies WinCati Mixed Mode lets you perform includes:

  • Telephone-only

  • Web-only with complex questionnaires and quotas

  • Telephone and Web split sample

  • Web studies with telephone recruitment

  • Telephone and Web studies with e-mail recruitment

  • Telephone and Web studies where respondents choose interview mode (example above)

WinCati Mixed Mode combines WinCati and Sensus Web. Since these two systems were designed to work together from the beginning, WinCati Mixed Mode offers true CATI/Web integration:

  • Interviews can switch between modes any number of times and in any order

  • CATI and Web interviews use one questionnaire-authoring system, questionnaire, sample database and respondent data database

  • Sample management rules, quotas, and dispositions are applied across interview modes

  • Question phrasing, presentation and flow can be switched during the interview to accommodate the interview mode

  • E-mail messages can be sent automatically to online respondents based on their interview status

  • Online data tools and statistics show CATI and Web results combined

Overall, WinCati Mixed Mode lets you harness the full potential of CATI and Web interviewing by:

  • Increasing cooperation rates, especially among hard to reach respondents

  • Providing a rigorous sampling frame for projecting Web-based results

  • Lowering interviewing costs

  • Shortening study times

Sensus 4.2: Power of Sensus Extend to Telephone Interviewing

Sensus 4.2, the latest release of our Web questionnaire-authoring system, extends the power and flexibility of Sensus to telephone interviewing. Now Sensus Web and WinCati use the same interviewing system, simplifying learning and production, lowering costs and making true mixed-mode interviewing a reality.

To accommodate telephone interviewing, we added to Sensus functionality required by telephone interviewers, such as the ability to:

  • Probe openends and to record explanatory notes

  • Review responses and edit openends

  • Exchange respondent information between sample records and the interview

  • Record voice-captured openends

We also added other features to increase Sensus' power, flexibility and ease of use. Among these new features are:

  • A new script editor that can efficiently edit CATI-length questionnaires and has an on-screen question navigator that lets you move quickly between questions.

  • Auto Test, which lets you automatically run a questionnaire and generate simulated respondent data while questionnaires are still in the authoring stage. You can use Auto Test data to check the logic of your questionnaire and to set up your analysis specifications.

  • Instructions that let you pass respondent information between e-mail databases and Web interviews

  • A new system variable that lets you skip questions or alter the way the questions are presented depending on the interview mode.

  • A new toolbar button that lets you toggle between how telephone and Web versions of questions look and function.
